Studio 24 has sponsored CamCreatives for a number of years, and more recently I’ve been helping to organise the monthly meet-ups as well.

I was invited by Cambridge Enterprise to represent CamCreatives at the annual Creative Cambridge conference. The conference celebrates creativity in Cambridge, debates pressing social and cultural issues, and looks for collaboration between University research and Cambridge’s cultural industries.

I joined the ‘Championing Creative Professionals’ panel alongside film maker Chloë Thomas and musician and poet Chanelle Mwale.

The panel discussed how to build thriving grassroots networks, and we soon discovered that we share many of the same challenges and aspirations. The panel and the audience agreed that creatives in Cambridge need space, funding, visibility and championing.

Cambridge is predominantly known as a science and tech hub, but we can’t ignore the role of art and culture in making Cambridge a place where people want to live, including local residents and all the people drawn here for work and study.

One theme coming from the conference is that creative groups should look to co-create and co-produce to build a stronger industry together. A new initiative called Create Cambridge aims to provide a collaborative framework to support creativity, community, and civic transformation.

With a membership of over 5000 people, CamCreatives is ready to play its part in helping to create Cambridge. As is Studio 24 as a business, and many of our team as residents.

The Creative Cambridge conference was full of energy, thoughtful perspectives and meaningful conversations about the future of creativity in Cambridge. We all need to think about what kind of city we want and how we can all contribute to shaping it.
