A PHP developer with a sustainability mindset

Chris likes to know how things work. He taught himself how to code, starting with HTML and CSS, then moving on to JavaScript and PHP. He became interested in PHP because of how efficient it is in web design, especially in managing large databases and data sets.

A few years ago, Chris read an article from Greenpeace about the effect of the internet on the environment. He was inspired to work towards a solution. He realised most emissions come from data, so he worked to make data sleeker using his PHP and front-end skills.

He is a generalist; he can do front-end and back-end development, but his main focus is always on sustainability. In Jan 2026, Chris joined the W3C Sustainable Web Interest Group as an invited expert. The mission of the Sustainable Web Interest Group is to improve digital sustainability so that the Web works better for all people and the planet.

Chris is a big picture thinker: always asking why, looking for connections, and working out what the impacts are. With the Sustainable Web Interest Group, Chris be helping with any new guidelines as well as discussing up and coming challenges with other thought leaders in the space.

Outside of work, Chris is studying for a master’s degree part-time (Interdisciplinary problems and methods). He loves music and collects guitars.
