We recognise we are in a climate emergency. It is our policy to minimise our carbon emissions and reduce the impact of our work on the environment.

Sustainable websites

We build carbon-efficient websites and web applications. We build ‘light’ websites which follow the Sustainable Web Guidelines as set out by the W3C and do not use unnecessary libraries or tracking code.

We prioritise building optimised, accessible, robust HTML web pages which can be efficiently cached to reduce energy usage and give users better performance without sacrificing design integrity or key objectives.

We write reusable code. All our projects start with Amplify, our accessible starter kit. It is time-efficient as well as energy-efficient.

We uphold the principles of an open web and use open source software for both front and back-end development.

Green web hosting

Working with (and using) the internet has an environmental impact. The cloud is physical and requires large data centres, energy and water consumption to run services. Digital services are responsible for around 4% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Electricity demand from data centres is expected to double by 2030.

It is our policy to use green web hosting and to migrate away from hosting suppliers who are not transparent about their energy and water consumption.

In the past 2 years, we have transitioned towards green web hosting for our clients. We aim to complete this by April 2027. We recommend green hosting providers for clients we don’t host ourselves.

Reducing our impact on the environment

At Studio 24, we aim to minimise the impact of our business activities on the environment on a day-to-day basis.

  • We measure our carbon footprint on an annual basis and put plans in place to reduce our carbon footprint wherever possible.
  • We reduce the use of paper in our day-to-day work and use sustainable office suppliers.
  • We never produce throw-away branded merchandise.
  • We minimise waste by providing recycling facilities in the office.
  • We reuse or recycle old equipment. Where equipment is not required, we donate it to local schools or charities.
  • We use local suppliers wherever possible to help reduce transport emissions and support the local economy.
  • We encourage staff to use public transport for travelling to client meetings.
  • We offer staff 2 extra days off a year for taking green travel on holidays instead of taking a plane.
  • All company cars are electric.
  • We train staff on our environmental policy, the importance of sustainability, and techniques in how to build low carbon websites.
  • We use Ecologi to offset emissions, though we recognise it’s more important to put in place real changes that encourage sustainability.
  • We have started our journey to BCorp accreditation and plan to be accredited by April 2027.
  • We take part in Digital Clean Up Days to reduce files saved online to further reduce our carbon footprint.

Advocacy

We promote sustainable practices with our clients and the industry.

Simon Jones talks about sustainability at Boye & Co industry events. He was a member of the BIMA Sustainability Council for 2 years and contributed to guidelines and sustainability events.

Chris Butterworth is an invited expert of the W3C Sustainability Interest Group and is helping develop the W3C Sustainability Guidelines. Chris has created Beacon, a tool to help measure the environmental impact of websites and regularly speaks about digital sustainability.
