We believe it’s important to create a greener, more sustainable web. Reducing the carbon emissions of websites is critical to this.
Our website sustainability audit will help you to understand the impact your website has on the environment, help your team work together, improve website performance, and reduce costs.
- Improving sustainability and talking about improvements you’ve made gives your organisation credibility and makes you a more attractive offer for customers.
- Cross-discipline teams – whether they are development teams, content teams, or sustainability leads – will be aligned with a shared language and focus to make improvements.
- Page weights will be reduced, making your website faster, boosting search engine rankings, and reducing bounce rates.
- Lighter web experiences reduce bandwidth and are more cost-efficient.
Chris Butterworth is a PHP Developer at Studio 24 and is our sustainability lead. He is an invited expert of the W3C Sustainable Web Interest Group, and he has put together an effective sustainability audit to help you reduce the carbon footprint of your website.
All online activity generates carbon emissions, every image, click, email, server call and visit to your website. Reducing the amount of carbon released by these events will help to mitigate the very real climate crisis we are living through.
What does the review include?
We will review the top 10 most-visited pages on your website to calculate your carbon emissions. We use a tool called Beacon, which calculates the impact of a visit to a web page for both the first visit and return visit. We then use these traffic levels to calculate the CO2e impact of your website.
We’ll identify redundant technology and obsolete code that weigh your website down and make it less sustainable.
This audit uses the W3C Web Sustainability Guidelines (WSG) 1.0 as its reference framework. Published by the W3C Sustainable Web Design Community Group, the WSG is the first international standard dedicated to sustainable web design and development. Each recommendation we make is mapped to its corresponding W3C Web Sustainability Guideline (WSG) reference.
We will provide a written report, along with clear actions you can take away and implement to reduce emissions. Some of our recommendations may require support from a developer.
The audit costs £399+VAT.

Green web hosting
If you want to move to a more environmentally sustainable hosting provider, we can help.
We work with Mythic Beasts, an independent hosting provider based in Cambridge. Founded in 2000, they offer managed colocation, dedicated and virtual server hosting in data centres in Cambridge, London, Amsterdam, and California. They are accredited by the Green Web Foundation as a green hosting provider.
We also work with Upsun, a hosting management platform that automates security, scaling, maintenance and monitoring on all major public cloud providers (AWS, Azure, Google and OVH). Upsun provides sustainable hosting options and carbon footprint reporting for public cloud providers.
