Here's what I learnt during my work experience at Studio 24!

Hello, I’m Isabelle, a Year 12 student at a local school, and I spent 2 weeks with Studio 24 completing work experience. As an A Level Computer Science student unsure about my future career, spending time with the team at Studio 24 really helped me become more knowledgeable about the variety of roles that exist in technology!

I was first made aware of Studio 24 when Simon came to visit my college, giving a talk on the company and web development, whilst highlighting the importance of accessibility on websites. I hadn’t really considered accessibility previously on my personal projects – the talk was quite eye-opening for me and prompted me to reach out for work experience! It was really exciting to talk more about accessibility with Isaac and Nicki, and I learnt lots about why accessibility is important, as well as how it can be implemented.

My first week

I spent quite a bit of time meeting with team members, talking to them about what they do day-to-day, what their side of the company does and how they work with others. For example, I learnt more from Nicki about accessibility, discovering how you can easily test websites for accessibility concerns using available tools and extensions (e.g using the WAVE tool), in combination with manual testing.

I then went ahead and tested some websites myself, and it was interesting to see that very well known/used websites still have many issues. I also started learning the programming language PHP through a course on Laracasts.

My second week

I used what I’d learnt in the course during the latter week of my work experience, where I was tasked with a mini project from Sean – to create a homepage and client listing page for the Intranet system. I really enjoyed working with SQL as it’s a big part of the A Level specification, however we don’t get to use it much at school. I also got to experience a Company Day where the team met and discussed various things – it was really interesting to be a part of!

A huge, huge thank you to everyone at Studio 24, not only for being so welcoming and friendly, but also for taking their time to support me – it’s been an amazing two weeks. Best of wishes to you all in the future!
