The English and Media Centre is a development centre, serving the needs of secondary and FE teachers and students of English and Media Studies in the UK and beyond.
They offer a variety of professional development courses, print and downloadable publications, and quarterly magazines for A Level students. They also engage in consultancy work and give expert contributions to national initiatives and debates on English and Media teaching.
The English and Media Centre chose us as their digital partner to completely redevelop their website and associated systems.
The key business goals for this project were to vastly improve the user experience of the website, develop business processes and reduce manual data entry administration tasks, and better inform people of the work and services offered by EMC.
Previously EMC’s online presence had essentially been split across multiple websites, with the main site, the blog, and download website all on separate domains. With user experience at the heart of the project, we created one single, clean and easy to use website which consolidated all of these different facets of the existing offering.
We developed the new website so that users need only log in through one page to access all restricted areas and once logged in they are able to perform multiple actions. These include; purchasing publications/downloads/magazines and registering for conferences and courses without having to enter all their details, view previous orders made on the site, retrieve previous PDF downloads, and view the magazine back catalogue.
To enable EMC to manage all of their content across the website we implemented one single CMS system (Expression Engine). We also set up automated systems so that when an order is made EMC receives an instant email notification describing that order and what action to take. Customers now have instant access to the digital download components of their order, and an automatic reminder when their subscription is due for renewal.
The new site was designed responsively to ensure it is optimised for all devices (smartphone/tablet/desktop/TV) and future proof as much as possible.
We’ve really enjoyed working on this website and are extremely proud of the finished result. We have multiple education clients and it’s always exciting to be involved in a project where we combine our digital expertise with our knowledge in the sector.
