Check content accessibility as you edit

These free tools can help you spot problems with your content while editing your web pages:

  • Editoria11y (available for WordPress, Drupal, Squarespace and Craft CMS)
  • Sa11y (available for WordPress, Drupal and Joomla)

Sa11y is also available as a bookmarklet, which can be installed in any desktop browser.

Check web page accessibility

These free tools check for a broader range of issues, beyond those just relating to content:

  • WAVE web accessibility evaluation tool
  • Accessibility Insights

Check colour contrast

  • Colour Contrast Analyser: can be used on web pages and for non-HTML documents.
  • WhoCanUse: includes a simulation of direct sunlight on a screen and night mode.
  • Contrast Checker: can check the contrast of text against an object background, e.g. a button, and check the contrast of the object background with the page background.
  • Contrast Ratio: great for testing semi-transparent colours.
  • Check the contrast of text on a background image

Check non-HTML document accessibility

  • Microsoft Office accessibility checker is available for Word, Powerpoint, Excel, Outlook and OneNote
  • For Google Workspace there are extensions for checking Google Docs, Google Slides and Google Sheets (free of charge with paid features)
  • axesCheck PDF Accessibility Checker
  • PAC PDF Accessibility Checker (a download for Windows).
  • PAVE 2.0 is an online tool for remediating PDFs.
