About the role

The Senior PHP Developer and Team Lead role is both a senior developer and management role in the agency, which has responsibility to line manage PHP developers and help lead our web application development work in the agency. The leadership work is focussed on PHP, JavaScript, web application development, and technical architecture.

We’re looking for someone with strong PHP skills, a collaborative and supportive mindset, and good soft skills who is interested in a leadership role at a small business where they can make a difference.

We’re a user-centred & accessibility-centred studio. We take complex content and data and simplify them for users through good design. We work for a range of clients across the public sector, charity, arts/culture and science/tech industries. Recent clients include W3C, UK Parliament and Cambridge University Botanic Garden. Our tech platforms are Laravel, Symfony, WordPress, Craft CMS and Vue.js.

We believe in flexibility and supporting staff to do their best work. Our preference is for full-time though we may consider part-time hours. Our studio is based in Cambridge, UK. We currently have a hybrid work pattern, with working remote the default and the team coming into the office for meetings, to collaborate, or just to have a different work environment. You’ll need to be based in the UK for this role. You’ll also need to be able to travel for client meetings when required (normally Cambridge and London).

Team Lead responsibilities

The first three months is a probation period, where you get a chance to ease into the role. You won’t be expected to take on the full team lead responsibilities until after this period.

Your role is split between project work and Team Lead work. For your Team Lead role you’ll be responsible for:

  • Leading the PHP Developer team
  • Line manager for two staff (may increase in future)
    • 1:1s, staff mentoring and supporting your team
    • First point of contact for HR issues
    • Staff development plans
    • Performance of work
    • Recruitment within your team
  • Leading process and improvement work for our PHP, JavaScript, web application development, and technical architecture work
Work includes:
  • Coaching and mentoring staff through 1:1s and staff development plans (identifying skills and planning learning with your team)
  • Making sure the team are working to our standards
  • Giving critical, constructive feedback
  • Dealing with any staff issues / HR queries (you’ll have support for this)
  • Staff reviews
  • Encouraging the team to share knowledge, help drive a culture of excellence
  • Maintain and evaluate processes and standards
  • Research current industry trends, recommend ones for the team to train on & use
  • Interviews, hiring & onboarding new staff
Along with the rest of the Leadership team you’ll:
  • Help form strategy of the agency and how we improve our business
  • Help improve operations and our standard processes across the agency (this is a shared leadership team responsibility)
  • Regularly review sales opportunities and help with promoting the agency and winning new work

Senior Developer responsibilities

Your normal project work will primarily cover the following type of work, however, due to the multidisciplinary nature of digital your work can expand into other areas if you have an interest in these.
  • Tech Lead on projects, helping oversee and guide the technical work on a project and ensure it meets user needs and business goals
  • Strategy, planning and consultancy work (Discovery projects, digital consultancy and research)
  • Understanding client business problems, problem solving and advising clients on how best to achieve their goals and user needs
  • Client liaison and communications
  • Leading client workshops
  • Planning web projects and estimating work
  • Technical architecture planning
  • PHP development in Laravel and Symfony
  • APIs and data integration/migration
  • Headless CMS integration
  • JavaScript development using progressive enhancement
  • Vue.js for complex single-page apps (e.g. interactive maps)
  • Testing web applications
  • Client support
  • Documentation


The role has a salary range of £45,000 to £55,000, depending on experience.
