Applications currently paused

Please note we are not taking new applications to this role at the moment.

Full-time or part-time, Permanent contract
Salary £30-£38K

About the role

We are looking for a Front-End Developer to join the technical team of our digital agency, Studio 24.

In that role, you will be implementing HTML/CSS/JS templates and integrating them into PHP-based CMSes. You will be working on a variety of client projects.

You will join teams put together on a per-project basis. You will collaborate with Project Managers, Web/UX Designers, PHP developers, DevOps specialists and interact directly with clients.

You will give your input on technical constraints and the feasibility of solutions. Sometimes formally as part of a ‘discovery’ process during which we research the project requirements.

What we are offering you

  • Work on exciting, highly visible client projects (e.g. W3C, UK Parliament, HS2) including many public institutions and charities
  • And thereby learn what it takes to build websites for a wide audience (UX, accessibility, GDPR, etc.) using techniques that follow W3C standards
  • In the context of an ever-evolving small business in which your voice will be heard
  • With a team of  friendly and approachable experts ready to mentor you and discuss best practices
  • In a role that will evolve over time, whether you’d like to specialise in an area, or expand beyond technical skills (into research and/or management)
  • A workplace that values well-being (flexible working arrangements, mental health awareness and support)
  • A quick and straightforward hiring process

What we are looking for

A front-end developer who is methodical, cares for the clients and their end-users, communicates well, and pays attention to details.

Here comes the usual list of skills for the job. Please don’t be put off by this list. We don’t expect you to know all of these or work that way from the get go. We are looking for someone who has interests in these areas, and is ready to adapt their skills and learn to do these things well.
Maybe you have just started out on your own and don’t know anything about version control and are happy when things work, regardless of the state of your code! And you will be happy to be given the opportunity to learn best practices and write code that is up to standards.
Or maybe you are an experienced developer, always sticking to your favourite JS framework and favourite syntax, but happy to step away from your usual tools and dive back into standard technologies. We’ll also be happy to get your input on our ways of working, wherever you are in your journey.

So, without further ado, you will have experience in or be motivated to learn about (in order of importance):

  • Semantic HTML and accessibility
  • CSS (and Sass)
  • Vanilla JavaScript – used sparingly as progressive enhancements
  • Front-end best practices: mobile-first approach, performance optimisation, BEM methodology, etc.
  • CMS setup and content modelling (in WordPress, Craft, Drupal)
  • Templating engine syntax (e.g. Twig)
  • Git version control
  • Build tools: NPM scripts
  • VueJS – used for specific projects such as interactive maps development

Working pattern

We believe in flexibility and supporting staff to do their best work. Our preference is for full-time though we may consider part-time hours (4 days a week) if that works best for you. Normal full-time hours are 37.5 hours a week.

We currently have a hybrid work pattern, with working remote the default and the team coming into the office for meetings, to collaborate, or just to have a different work environment. There is no expectation of regular in-office working, though we do want you to be able to meet up when needed.

We are looking for someone based in the UK for this role, it’s expected that you are able to travel for client meetings when required and when it’s safe to do so (normally Cambridge and London).
